BENEFITS OF PROFESSIONAL IEC MANAGEMENT
WHY CHOOSE
CONCLUSION
What is IEC
An Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which is mandatory for export from India or import to India. No export or import shall be made by any person without obtaining an IEC unless specifically exempted. For service exports, however, IEC may not be necessary except when the service provider is availing benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
Consequent upon the introduction of GST, the IEC issued is generally the same as the PAN of the firm. However, the IEC is still separately issued by DGFT based on an application. The nature of the firm obtaining an IEC may be Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, or Society. This makes IEC a universal requirement for all types of business entities involved in international trade.
Pre-Requisites for Applying for IEC
IEC may be applied on behalf of a firm which may be a Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, or Society. The firm must have a PAN, a bank account in the name of the firm, and a valid address before applying. The address may be physically verified by DGFT at the time of issuance. Applicants should keep their PAN, bank details, and firm-related information ready to ensure a smooth application process.
In addition, having accurate documentation and updated business information helps in faster approval and avoids unnecessary delays. Once issued, IEC remains valid for a lifetime, provided it is updated as per DGFT requirements. Businesses must also ensure that their IEC details are kept current to maintain compliance and avoid disruptions in import-export activities.
